Sunshine Community Gardens: A Lush Escape Amidst Austin's Urban Landscape

Video Transcript
Hey everyone, this is Gary, bringing you a little sunshine on an overcast Wednesday morning in the ATX. It's June 11th, 8:38 a.m. And I'm over at the Sunshine Community Gardens. This is north central Austin. And the community gardens sit on the intersection of 49th and Sunshine. Accessible from Lamar and Burnet Road. And there is approximately 3 acres of land over here, which is leased from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired next door. The land is subdivided down into uh approximately 200 plots of various shapes and sizes. Including some micro plots for the kids. Last year was actually the 50th anniversary of the Sunshine Community Gardens, opened in 1974. And Everywhere you look there are plants and produce. Some tomatoes here. Also Some very quirky art, there's a a shovel here that's been turned into a face. Oh boy, some big squash down there, look. The gardens also partners with several food banks, including Micah 6 who have plots here to grow food. Also other community gardeners can donate excess produce. Plenty more tomatoes here. Now, the garden is open to the public, uh, welcomes responsible visitors who just like to take a walk through the plots. But uh remember to leave only footprints and take only memories!
