Discover the Serene Charm of Austin's Historic Seaholm Power Plant

Hey, good morning everyone. It's Thursday, July 17th. This is Gary for City Vibe, just easing into the day. On the front lawn. Of the Seaholm power plant. Just basking in the glory of the brutalist architecture. brutalist in the true sense the French phrase “beton brut” Meaning raw or naked concrete. Um, I also love the art deco signage. Above the doors here. And I've often pondered why the lightning bolt is upside down. And uh, the conclusion that I've reached is that it represents her work, uh, generating power and sending it up to the grid. Uh, rather than being struck by lightning from above. And through this work, uh, she served the good people of Austin for the better path, the better part of half a century, um, from her commission in the late 1940s until her turbines stopped spinning. In the early 1990s. And uh she's enjoying a fairy tale retirement. I love how her front lawn has become a de facto dog park. And of course on the backside she anchors the very fro through Seaholm district where, Her old chimneys rubbed shoulders with a Trader Joe's. Uh, a froyo joint and a blowout bar. So that's your view from the front lawn of the Seaholm power plant on Thursday morning.
