Cactus Cafe Celebrates Musical Legends: A Glimpse Inside UT's Iconic Venue

Hey everyone, it's Thursday morning, July 17th, 9:09 a.m. This is Gary over at UT. I'm out on the West Mall. We're outside of the Texas Union Building. Of course, very quiet over the summer months, but the union is open and also the Cactus Cafe, Which really is the jewel in the crown of the Texas Union. It's a wonderful intimate venue, a listening room where many great artists how played over the years. And, uh, let's take a quick look inside. And uh see what we can see. So as you walk into the Union Building, there’s a little coffee shop on the left hand side here. And then if you wrap around the corner, this is the lounge area in front of the Cactus Cafe, which is the venue. Um, but I wanted to show you, uh, some of the posters that line the wall out here. Uh, Alejandro Escovedo is a personal favorite of mine. A great old uh. Poster there. uh, Doug Sahm of course, uh, Doug Sahm lends his name to Doug Sahm Hill, which is the spiral hill which sits just, uh, adjacent to auditorium shores on the south side of town Lake. Uh, Here's a big name. uh Townes Van Zandt played here. Um, I think I can see. It's, uh, almost can't believe my eyes here next to Joe Ely we've got a Bob Dylan poster. Yeah, some great memorabilia of the artists who've played in this listing room over the years. Another Alejandro Escovedo poster here. And yeah, music continues, uh, year round in the iconic Cactus Cafe. Over in the student union building here. At the University of Texas. And of course it wouldn't be complete. Without a longhorn.
