LGBTQ Protest at Texas Capitol Challenges Bathroom Bill in Special Legislative Session
Hey, good morning, everyone. This is Gary from City Vibe. It's Wednesday morning, July 30th, 10:38 a.m. I'm over at the Texas State Capitol and um we have uh. A presentation, a protest here by members of the LGBTQ community, and this is in response to the bathroom bill, which is on the agenda for this special session. We're in week two of the special session now, the 89th Texas legislature, and there is a bill on the docket, uh, to do with transgender folks, uh, using the bathroom Which corresponds er to their sex assigned at birth. Uh it looks like we just caught the tail end actually of the uh the presentation there. Uh small but vocal crowd, and that's your view now just panning south.
Hey everyone, it's Wednesday, July 30th, 10:41 a.m. This is Gary. I'm over at the Texas State Capitol. Uh, just turning my back now on the Capitol, walking south, uh, down the Great Walk, uh, towards the inner section of 11th and, uh, Congress, um. That kind of caught me by surprise, uh, the protest there, uh, by the LGBTQ folks and their allies. Um, the buzz this week has been more to do with, uh, SB 5, which is the bill that proposes to ban any hemp derived consumables that contain THC. Uh, there was a very brief hearing that started on Monday. Um, but was almost immediately adjourned, and that committee actually reconvenes today, Wednesday, so I anticipated seeing activity out here, much more to do With the hemp bill with SB 5, than with the bathroom bill, but, uh, risk of sounding like Forrest Gump, uh, the state capitol is like a box of chocolates, you really never know what you're gonna get.
