6th Street's New Barriers in Focus: How Security Measures Are Altering the Iconic Austin Vibe

Video Transcript
Hey y'all, this is Gary out uh on 6th Street. This is the intersection of 6th and Brazos. And taking a look at the new security barriers that are in place. Oh boy. Real time drama here, fire truck just making his way through the intersection. Um, Back to the security barriers, so the the water filled pedestrian barriers don't start for another block east of here. They go east from San Jacinto, but what we're seeing here at the intersection 6th and Brazos is these vehicle barricades which I guess are to prevent people from using weaponizing vehicles essentially. Um, which is rather a sobering thought, no pun intended. Hey y'all, it's Wednesday lunchtime, 12:06, May 7th. This is gearing out at the intersection of 6th and Brazos. Uh, just taking a look at these new, uh, pedestrian safety barriers that are going up along 6th Street. So the water filled barriers don't actually start for another block east of here. They begin at San Jacinto. But what I noticed even at this intersection, are these anti-vehicle devices that are placed up on the sidewalks. And uh clearly their purpose is to prevent uh vehicles from being weaponized, um, which is rather a sobering thought, uh, no pun intended. Hey y'all, Wednesday lunchtime, May 7th, 12:09 p.m. This is Gary. I'm now at the inner section of 6th and San Jacinto, just taking a look at these, uh, water filled pedestrian barriers which now line 6th Street, uh, east from San Jacinto. Uh, they essentially create a protected walkway for pedestrians, and I noticed that either ends of the walkway are these anti-vehicle barriers which are there to prevent vehicles from being brought along here intentionally or otherwise. It does change the aesthetic of 6th Street, and although it's early days yet, I see there's a potential problem as well, this flat surface of the top of this barrier, I think is very inviting for intoxicating people to jump up and run along, show boat, basically. Uh, so we'll see how it plays out. This is the view now looking, uh, west along 6th Street back towards Congress Avenue.
