Quiet Reflection by Barbara Jordan Statue Marks Juneteenth at University of Texas

Video Transcript
Hey everyone, Happy Juneteenth. It's uh Thursday, June 19th, 10:36 a.m. And this is Gary and Miss Barbara Jordan over at the University of Texas. Uh, this statue of Miss Jordan sits on the intersection of 25th and Whittis. And I think for most of us, we know uh Barbara Jordan's name, uh, because of the terminal named after her over at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. Um, I've come here today because it's Juneteenth. Campus is very quiet. Obviously school is out for the summer. Uh, there are no, there are no classes or events either on Juneteenth. Um, so it's just an opportunity to reflect on, uh, some of the great African American stories that have shaped. This state, um, Miss Jordan came from humble roots. She was brought up in the 1930s. She was born in 1936, uh, in Houston, and she became an educator, an attorney, and she was the first African American to be elected to the, uh, Texas, uh, Senate in the the post-reconstruction years, she went on to become the first Southern African American woman to make it into the US Senate. Uh, there's a lot of reading material surrounding this monument. You can take a moment and look over her biography far more eloquently than I ever could. And I think it's just a great place to come and visit today. Juneteenth 2025. Hey everyone, it's Juneteenth. Thursday, June 19th. 10:42. This is Gary on at the inner section. Of 25th and Whittis over on the 40 acres, and I'm right by the Barbara Jordan statue. I've come by to visit and pay my respects. Such a quiet day uh here at UT. Obvious school is out. And No classes or events on Juneteenth, uh, so it's the perfect day to come by. And uh, reflect on. Not only Miss Jordan's story, but also the story of other great African Americans who have shaped. This state. The monument is surrounded by Several benches to sit and reflect. Uh, some beautiful pink marble, well, yeah, pink granite, I think this is. Uh, I believe that pink granite is also the material used to construct the Texas Capitol building. Quite appropriate since uh Miss Jordan was the first African American to be elected to the state Senate in the post reconstruction years.
