Scorching Heat Empties Austin’s Trails at Lunchtime as Temperatures Soar

Hey everyone, Gary from City Vibe here, out on the, uh, Butler hike and bike trail. It is Wednesday lunchtime, August 28th, uh, just coming up to 1 p.m. Um, I'm right in the shadow here of the Congress Avenue Bridge, right by the little bat viewing area, um. There is a, uh, there's a line in an old Noel Coward song, um, that goes something like Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, and that seems quite uh. Quite appropriate right now. Uh, it is a scorcher out here, folks, um. I think it is literally just me. And uh Someone with a dog out here, uh, don't really see too much strenuous exercise out here. Uh, it's just too hot and humid right now. There's a handful of folks who are more sort of power walking or just taking a, a recreational stroll. I'm actually gonna hurry up and get into the shade of the Congress Avenue bridge here and, uh, let's just take a little look at the water. I'm not even seeing much recreational, uh, water traffic out here either, but uh. This is Gary, uh, for City Vibe Wednesday lunchtime under the Congress Avenue bridge. Hey you're Gary for City vibe here. I'm right on the Butler Hike and bike trail, um, right out, uh, right underneath the Congress Avenue bridge. Uh, there's a little bat watching. Uh, platform right there. It is a scorcher, folks. I mean, it's Texas, it's August, uh, it's 1 p.m. It is hot, it is humid. Uh, I'm fixated on this little water leak here that seems to be coming from a broken sprinkler line. Birds are all taking a sip from it as well. I almost tempted to put my tongue out and take a sip myself. It is so hot and uncomfortable out here right now. Uh, very. Minimal pedestrian traffic, uh, on the trail and quite rightly so, uh, you've no business being out here exercising. I noticed that even the lake is quiet right now. I think there might just be one little guy in a fishing boat underneath the first South First Street bridge. Uh, so yeah, hot, muggy, uh, humid, uh, Thursday lunchtime out here on the Butler hike and bike trail.
