New Construction Rising: Urban Development Surges in West Campus, Austin

Hey, good morning everyone. Gary from City Vibe. Out over at UT on the drag, right, uh, right by the inner section here at 26th and uh Guadalupe. And you know, just when you think there's not another square inch of available space uh to be built upon. Another construction project starts on West Campus. So I'm right here at Roppolo's and uh, anyone who's been in Austin for a while will actually remember these little trolley buses here, uh, used to be operated by the city. The city used to call them the the armadillos or the dillos, and they used to run a…. Kind of distracting. You've got the uh Roppolo's doing their marketing, uh, spiel right right outside the store here. Um, back to the dillos, yeah, these things, uh, used to operate little closed loops around the downtown area. But this, uh, this construction site here used to be a hostel called the Drifter Joe's. Uh, kind of like a tourist hostel kind of thing. And uh it was demolished a little while ago. I honestly thought it would just become a parking lot, but I can't believe what I'm seeing here. Uh, this to me looks like the core of a of an apartment building. Uh, that looks like elevator shafts, that looks like a stairwell, and although I'm no expert, that's typically what goes in first, and then they build an apartment complex around it. Uh, it's almost comical how densely populated West Campus is.
