Historic Wooldridge Square Park Receives Much-Needed Renovation Amidst Iconic Surroundings
Hey everyone, Gary, for City vibe here. It's Wednesday lunchtime. I'm over at Wooldridge Square Park, and here's a site you don't see very often. There's actually some activity going on over here. It's an interesting space. This is one of 4 city block parks that was actually defined under the, uh, the Waller plan in the 1830s. Uh, it sits between 9th and 10th, San Antonio Street and Guadalupe, and it pretty much sat dormant for about 70 years until, Uh, in 1909, uh, Mayor Wooldridge, uh, sponsored, uh, the construction of this bandstand slash gazebo, which is getting a. A well deserved makeover. Um, some big names have actually spoken here over the years. Uh, Lyndon Baines Johnson launched his first Senate campaign with a rally in Wooldridge Square Park. Also Booker T. Watson, excuse me, Booker T. Washington actually spoke here as well. Uh, little fun fact, you can actually see the Texas Capitol from here, and that is no accident. This is actually a protected site corridor. Uh, on the city. Under a city ordinance, so no buildings can be built that would block that line of sight. So there you go, the uh pavilion in uh. Wooldridge Square Park is getting a makeover.
