Start Your Day with a Splash of Color at Austin’s Iconic Rainbow Sculpture
Hey, good morning, everyone. It's Tuesday, July 15th, 7:31 a.m. This is Gary for City vibe, just easing into the day over at the inner section of 8th and Colorado, downtown Austin, uh, right outside the municipal building which actually used to be, uh, City Hall right up until 2004 when the new City Hall on Second Street Was opened. But what I'm here for today is just to enjoy. Some art in public places. Uh, this particular piece is called Tracking the End of the Rainbow. What you notice first about it is the very exaggerated geometry. Uh, just to give you some context, I'm 6 ft tall, and the horse and the cowboy are both, uh, comically tall and skinny. It's almost as if, uh, you're looking at a shadow that was cast in the early morning hours or the late afternoon hours. Um, but of course, That is immediately set aside because of the The color scheme on this install, it's, it's an abstract representation of a rainbow, and in fact there therein lies the central message of the piece. Uh, it's about chasing rainbows. Essentially, the artist invites us to contemplate how, uh, the closer we get to an objective. The further away it seems to recede from us, uh, kind of like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, and one nice touch about this is behind the horseman, uh, are the footprints of the horse. And to give the peace context. In front of the horsemen are cattle tracks. So there you go, folks, uh, in a section of 8th and Colorado. Come by and enjoy some art in public places.
